It took quite a while for the twins to be able to look at their brother without falling into fits of giggles, and of course, William spent fifteen minutes glaring at me. After that, though, the entire day flew by, until it was past nine p.m. His cousins had come and gone, but not before telling me stories of how William was when he was a kid.
His mother was the sweetest thing, explaining to me the reason why she acted the way she did when I arrived.
“William’s first girlfriend was with him for six years, and she was a total bitch. I needed to check you out before you entered my house. I hope you weren’t too offended, Willow. I learned my lesson the hard way. You see, when we met Elizabeth, she was all ‘my nails, my hair, oh, my daddy bought this’ but since she was the first woman my son ever brought home, I was excited. I ignored what my sixth sense told me.”
“And what did it say?”
“Run!”
We all laughed at how serious she was.
A comfortable silence fell over the room. We were all sitting on the couch; William and I were on the left side, my legs tucked under me with my head resting on William’s shoulder. He was combing his fingers through my hair as he watched the news. While this was a normal position for us, I could tell how different it was for his sisters by the looks they were giving me.
“Six years.”
“Excuse me?”
“My brother was with Elizabeth for six years. They never sat like you two are now. I’ve never seen my brother that relaxed.”
“Laura,” William growled.
“What?”
“It’s not a competition.”
She was quiet after that, but I saw Kiara turn to look at me before she whispered, “If it was, Willow won, and we all see the ring, even if he told us not to mention it. Congratulations and welcome to the family.” Then she winked.
I bit my lip and turned my face toward a random picture frame, blinking quickly.
This is how a normal family behaved. This house was so warm and cozy. They were so nice to me, and to each other. I knew the truth, and this wasn’t for me. They thought I was with William; they didn’t ask questions, didn’t judge, but they were only being nice because they didn’t know me or my past.
The things I did, and had done to me.
No mother would allow their son to be with a woman like me. This house, this happiness, this family . . . it would never be there for me.
I raised my hand slowly, without trying to attract attention, and I wiped the few tears that fell from my eyes. Of course William saw it.
He grabbed my chin with his hand and turned my head to face him.
The way he was looking at me, I wanted to close the few inches and kiss him. I wanted to live in this make-believe world and never leave. I wanted to stay in this bubble of warmth.
